Chapter 5: Joining the family

Shin-ju

Roseia had progressed from full weight bearing to walking with an aid for small distance. One morning she got out of bed with the aim of heading to the bathroom without her walker, “please be careful in there” I called out. Five minutes later I heard a loud noise in the bathroom, and I ran into the bathroom to find her on the ground.

She was unconscious with a small puddle of blood next to her head so I pressed the attention button and checked her pulse. The next thing I saw was a nurse and a doctor rush in to take charge of the situation, I stood back while they checked her breathing, airway and pulse. They stabilised her head and neck then she was taken away to see how severe her head wound was.

Her normal doctor came into the room and he inquired “what happened?” I told him everything that led up me finding her on the ground. “I’m glad your group has a policy of watching over her, you were here to get our attention very quickly. Please wait in here and I will keep you updated” he thanked me.

One hour later I had just finished a phone call with my wife when the doctor walked back into the room. “Roseia has been taken into surgery as her head injury was severe, it will be around two hours, and she will require close supervision once she wakes up” he informed me. “Thanks doctor” I replied.

It had been three days since her surgery, and we were waiting for her to wake up. Ki Yu-ri and I were keeping watch, when my wife exclaimed softly “I think the fingers on her right hand moved.” “Are you sure honey?” I questioned. I observed roseia’s left hand while Yu-ri watched her right and she was right as we saw random fingers move.

“If you can hear me squeeze my hand” I instructed her and I felt her hand squeeze mine. “Please squeeze your left hand for yes and right hand for no. Are you able to hear me?” she squeezed her right hand; this told me she was responding in the right way.

I pressed the attention button, and it was clear that they had her room on priority, so a nurse came into the room quickly. “She is about to wake so please inform her doctor.” The moment he stepped into the room Roseia slowly opened her eyes, a look of embarrassment showed on her face. “I don’t need to ask if you remember how you got in this position as I can see it on your face” he remarked.

“It’s currently three days since you had surgery for your head injury, so for the next three days please keep your head movements to a minimum. I am putting you back on bed rest to recover from the surgery.” He continued “You have someone with you for least twelve hours, so we know there are no side effects. If you behave yourself, I might allow you to walk around with a walker with supervision.”

I felt her squeeze my hand “she agrees to your terms” I informed the doctor. “left hand squeezed is yes and the right is a no.” The doctor added “the breathing tube will stay in until it’s safe for you to move your head and neck.” she squeezed my hand again in response.

Roseia

Three days later the neck and head brace were removed as my head had healed enough for me to move around slowly. This allowed the breathing tube come out again, I wasn’t sure how much my human body could take. my gut feeling was telling me that my human body might not make it all the way to recovery.

Unfortunately, my gut feeling came true after waking up two weeks later, except I felt different. I looked down to see my claws showing on my hand and before I could completely freak out, I heard Yeon {Roseia look at my eyes.} I focused on his fox eyes with him saying “You need to calm down, put your tails and claws away. Also change your eyes back to your human ones, so the breathing tube can come out.”

My body relaxed so I noticed Shin-ju holding my legs down and I felt him let go once he had the permission from Yeon. {how long was I out?} I asked. Yeon replied {you were out for two weeks. I had a message from the old hag, to be in your room on the sixth December because she had seen your human body die before the healing process was over.}

The doctor entered the room to take my breathing tube out, he asked “Roseia does your throat feel sore or uncomfortable?” I squeezed my right hand to say no and he looked shocked, so he checked my throat. The doctor couldn’t find any redness or damage; he still gave me three days vocal rest to be on the safe side.

Once the three days of vocal rest were up, my blood was drawn and I went through a lot of tests. he walked into room with a shocked look on his face, so I asked, “doctor, are you ok?” “I’m good Roseia your results are the reason for my shock” he replied. “Overall, your body has improved including your immune system, this means I can allow you to leave your room. I had to reread the results to make sure they were correct and I can say your results confirmed why you looked more alive when you woke up this time.”

Moo-young inquired “has the nerve damage in her legs been healed?” “her legs have healed so all that is left do to is continue your rehabilitation. I am glad to see a major improvement since you first entered our hospital” he replied with a smile on his face.

Yun

“Good morning honey, did you have a good dream? you have the same smile your dad does when he is happy” mum commented. “it was a nice dream all about Roseia and even now I can’t stop thinking about her” I replied. As mum was getting my clothes for the day out, she asked “what if your dream is a sign of your gut feelings about Roseia. Do you want to introduce yourself to her today to see if your gut feeling goes away?”

“Yes please” I replied jumping up and down. “Ok let’s get you dressed and I’ll let your school know you won’t be coming in today.” mum agreed. The rest of the time before meeting Roseia was filled with breakfast and playtime to get some of my energy out ‘according to mum’.

The closer to the hospital we got, the stronger my gut feeling became and mum kept looking at me with a smile on her face. When we got to the hospital, dad turned to me before we left the car, “Yun, Roseia is most likely to be sleeping so we need to use our quiet indoor voice inside the hospital” dad reminded me. I kept dad’s reminder in my mind as we walked through the hospital on the way to her room.

My body kept feeling heavier as were got closer to her room and suddenly we reached her door. The heaviness and my gut feeling just went away as dad opened the door. I walked inside to see her sleeping so I sat on the couch, while my parents sat either side of her.

The last part of my gut feeling remaining pushed me to hold her hand and her eyes opened. “Good morning this is our daughter Lee Yun, she has been waiting to meet you” dad introduced me to her. {it’s nice to meet you auntie} i thought to my aunt.

{Auntie? Does that mean you claim me as family Yun?} she exclaimed in surprise. I think she projected her thought to dad as he also had a surprised look. {Does this make us officially family?} she asked dad and I.

{if my daughter claims you as family, I can back her claim up so welcome to the family sister} dad projected to both of us. {how old are you and why do you look like a five-year-old?} she asked me. {I am three but being half nine tailed fox means I think and look like five-year-old} i answered my aunt.

Roseia

The moment Yun acknowledged my position as her aunt and by association making Yeon my older brother was massive for me. This made me think about my own fox clan, it had been so long since I last saw them so I wasn’t sure if they were still alive. I remember the trials the elders put me through as a young child to test my abilities and support of my many aunts and uncles.

I received a similar feeling of support from the addition to my existing family, which was going to be important on this journey of healing. The rest of the time until after lunch was spend listening to Yun talk about her likes, dislikes and especially how she has felt since I entered their lives. It was amazing at how much a five year old could talk and the range of topics mentioned.

The silence from her when lunch rolled around was lovely, Ji-ah had gone done to the cafeteria for their lunches while mine was delivered. Halfway through lunch I sent Ji-ah and Yeon a look which translated to ‘she likes to talk’, they laughed in response. After lunch I found myself nodding off so the table was moved away and the last thing I felt was a gentle hug by Yun before I closed my eyes.

Yeon

Moo-young and I were watching over my sister when he gasped “her energy is rising to a dangerous level, we need to dispel it.” “There is one place that would work but it requires permission to take her out of here for a few hours” I replied. He stayed in the room while I went to get permission from her doctor under the premise of going to a local park for a fresh air and a change of scene.

“I grant your permission with the condition of taking a tank of oxygen with you along with her chair” he instructed me. Her room felt different when I returned, I looked around and there was a marking on each of the walls. “I have prepared her room for when she comes back to help contain the energy. The temporary barrier I placed on her core when she was human, didn’t go away so her energy has been trapped causing the rise” Moo-young replied looking guilty.

He asked, “did you get permission?” “I did so a nurse is bringing her wheelchair along with a tank of portable oxygen in case anything happens” I confirmed. “We need to wrap her up warm so I leave before she wakes up.” The nurse brought her wheelchair just as we had finished wrapping her up warmly. “we will be back in three hours nurse” I told her.

I rang the old hag on the way to the office to inform her of why we were visiting. The old man was waiting for us when i pulled up, he looked happy but was perplexed at why his daughter was still sleeping. “Its safer for her to not be awake until the excess energy can be released” I explained.

We headed inside and straight to the ritual room, where the old hag was waiting for us. I laid her down on the bed, then I heard from the door “So how did this happen Yeon?” Taluipa asked. I walked out off the room so she could seal the door, then I replied “A temporary barrier was placed on her while she was getting her fox energy back bit by bit. It didn’t disappear when she went back to full fox so the energy has been building up and her level got too dangerous.”

Two minutes later there was a loud bang which dissipated very quickly that came from the ritual room. The sound made me jump, then I looked over at her to see a calm expression as if she was expecting it. “You saw this happening, right?” I questioned her. She didn’t give me a verbal answer as her response instead it was knowing smile on her face.

Calmly she said, “shall we open the door and see how my daughter is?” I opened the door to find a black and purple fox running around, “stop her from getting out” I heard from the old hag. I was a bit too slow and she ran past me upstairs, so we had corner her in the main room.

Taluipa went into parent mode when she raised her voice “LEE HALLIWELL ROSEIA” the old man and I stopped in our tracks when we heard that. “STOP PLAYING AROUND AND SHOW YOURSELF IN FRONT OF ME RIGHT NOW.” I saw my sister slowly appear in the corner of my eye with her head down, her body language showed submission.

Roseia went in front of her mother, then I heard a sigh “You have till the count of three to change back into your human form. one” my sister paced on the spot “two” still more pacing “two and a half” and before granny got to three, there was Roseia in her human form struggling to stand. I used my speed to catch her before she fell over.

“I had been holding back on punishing you for not listening to your doctors so this is your second strike. You can except a punishment coming your way, I won’t tell you what it is so use this time out to reflect on the right way to behave” the old hag told her. After this we headed back to the hospital, with no idea of when my sister’s punishment would happen.

Roseia

I woke up locked in my body unable to move anything except for my eyes, this meant I was left with my hearing and no way to communicate with the outside world. The only way I could see what was happened was via my minds eye which told me this was mum’s punishment. I wasn’t expecting this type of time out but it made sense as I couldn’t go to one of the types of hell physically.

My mind’s eye saw the light as the doctor tested my vision and he saw there was no response. he described my eyes as clouded over, then I heard Moo-young inform the doctor that it might run in the family as Yeon suffered the same vision problems in the past.

I saw myself on full life support as I wasn’t able to breath for myself while my body was in this state. something told me this would be worse than all the times I had been unconscious so far. I’d been in so far. I decided to reflect like mum told me to do so I hopes she would end this punishment soon than later.
