Chapter 3: 1st time in Hospital

“Talking with a voice”, {talking with telepathy}

Roseia

I woke up in an unfamiliar room unable to use my voice and a machine was helping me to breathe. My hands moved, alerting Yeon “Roseia can you hear me?” he asked. I had no way of responding to him since I had been turned into a human without my power of telepathy.

Two figures entered the room but I couldn’t make out any details due to my bad eyesight, “Roseia if you can understand me blink once for yes and twice for no” the doctor asked. I blinked once “please follow this light with your eye only” he instructed me. He was happy with my ability to use my eyes, then he told me “squeeze my hand as hard as you can.”

This was harder for me because my hands weren’t responding as they should be, which was frustrating and it showed by a few tears falling from my eyes. The doctor saw this “don’t be hard on yourself Roseia, you have spent the last three weeks in a state of unconsciousness. It will take time for your strength to return and before you ask we are giving your lungs and throat more time to heal. Your throat was badly damaged so you are being fed by tube for the meantime” the doctor explained. The doctor left the room, then Yeon looked like he was close to tears but let out a sigh of relief instead.

“One of us has been at your bedside the entire time so you haven’t been alone. We have only known you for a short time, it’s rare my husband is speechless like this.” Ji-ah said. My eyelids began to feel heavy so I let them close and I felt Yeon gently rub my left hand letting me know I wasn’t alone.

Two weeks later my level of frustration towards my enforced silence had grown and I needed a way to release it within my limited capability. I was alone for the first time since I’d woken up, which gave me time to reflect on my feelings. As I was about to dive deeper into them, I was distracted by Moo-young and an unfamiliar doctor walking into the room.

She was carrying a clear container full of colourful objects, which she placed on the surface near the couch, “Good morning Roseia I am Kim Mun-Hee, how are you feeling?” she asked. I gave her a thumbs down so Moo-young moved the portable table over my bed along with grabbing the communication board. The next thing she said was “please expand on why you are feeling this way.”

I pointed at frustration and bored on the communication board and she understood “I think I can help you with a way to express how you are feeling. I am here to start your rehabilitation for your body. In the box are fidget toys for your hands and other tools to awaken the nerves in your legs.”

Doctor Kim placed a few of them on the table, there was a colourful circle silicone popping toy, a stress ball and a plastic tangle toy. She also placed two wooden brushes, one with thick bristles and the other with thin ones, she noticed my confused look. Moo-young explained “I think the brushes with the different types of bristles will stimulate all the nerves of your lower half.”

She was impressed and her response was “you are correct I am going to use them for that purpose, especially for your feet Roseia because we need your feet to be able to detect the tiniest changes on the ground. This will make it safer when you are learning to walk again.” My eyes were drawn to the circle silicone popping toy so she handed it to me, the moment I started popping my frustration began to leave my brain.

“As you pop each line try using a different finger to get your fingers used to movement and you don’t need to worry about being too rough so it’s perfect to get any feelings out while you can’t talk. As your hands get stronger we can move on to the stress ball and a plastic tangle toy to truly get your hands working again” she told me.

I was listening to her and I felt Moo-young giving me calming energy while holding one of my hands. After observing me playing with the popping toy for five minutes, she grabbed the brush with the larger bristles uncovered my feet and ran it along my feet. My lower body moved at first contact and took note of the movement so she asked me to “close your eyes and pop a bubble if you feel anything then either raise your left or right hand for which foot you felt.”

This was successful with the larger bristled brush and then she repeated with the smaller bristled brush on the feet, then she did the same on my legs. Moo-young noted an overall improvement. Doctor Kim was really happy to hear this news “this means once your lungs are strong enough, we can focus on your recovery” she exclaimed.

The session went on for another half an hour, then she left the three fidgets with me for me to practise with till she saw me next week. After Doctor Kim left he noted out loud how quiet it was so he asked if I wanted some music in my headphones, I pointed to yes on the board. He grabbed my iPad and noise cancelling headphones and in the YouTube Music app I searched for Stray Kids. I set the right volume and pressed play on the top songs and moo-young placed them on my ears, I was still able to hear him along with the music. I entered my happy place no longer feeling frustrated and bored, which was a good thing, so I gently bopped along with the music as Moo-young watched me become more relaxed.

Yeon

One month later I was sitting with Roseia, she was relaxing by listening to music when her main doctor entered the room. “Good morning Roseia and Yeon, I have good news. Your lungs are strong enough for the breathing tube to be removed and your feeding tube can also be removed. Give me a moment to put on a pair of gloves and I will remove the feeding tube” he said.

I looked away while he took it out, then the doctor continued “a nurse will bring a bowl of rice porridge and a glass of water after I remove the breathing tube, but you will remain on oxygen until your breathing is back to normal. Your throat will be sore because of the breathing tube and that is normal, so you need to remain on vocal rest for one more week.”

Roseia gave the doctor an annoyed look and I’m sure I heard {one more week} in my mind. {yes you heard me correctly, I was given my telepathy back} she responded. I looked away again and I heard a dry cough which told me she needed a drink.

When I looked back, she had a bowl of rice porridge and a glass of water on the table over the bed. She was receiving oxygen through her nose and to my ears her breathing was stronger than before. I took one look at her expression and had to look away before I burst out loud into laughter. {I’m sorry Roseia, your feeling of annoyance is written all over your face for all to see} I thought to her.

The doctor asked me “are you ok?” and I responded with “yes doctor, the look of annoyance on my sister’s face made me want to laugh out loud.” “Roseia I can understand your desire to talk but your vocal cords need time to rest before you put them to work. the communication board has been working so far and will be enough for one more week so please be patient” the doctor calmly explained.

“After she has finished her food can I take her to the enclosed garden for a change of scenery with portable oxygen?” I asked him. He looked up then faced us “as long as you keep her warm I will give my permission. I will get a nurse to bring a wheelchair, portable oxygen machine and two warmed up blankets, please limit it to one hour and please come back here if she falls asleep sooner.”

When we reached the enclosed garden I saw her eyes light up for the first time as a human. I could see her body relax with the change of scenery and to anyone passing by us, we were sitting in silence. In reality she was singing songs from whom I assumed was Stray Kids and projecting it into my mind.

This was a good thing for her as it allowed her body to relax but also tire her mind so she could sleep. I enhanced a rainbow that appeared after a short rain shower. She noticed it and said {the rainbow looks lovely; this has helped improve my mood so thank you Yeon}. Her body gave a big yawn which was followed by a grimace in pain, this was my cue for us to head back to her room.

Roseia fell asleep in the chair heading back to her room and when the doctor saw this he was happy. I carefully put her back in bed and the doctor quietly reconnected her to the main oxygen machine. “I noticed she looked more relaxed so it might help if you can bring in some of her own personal belongings to make the space her own” he commented quietly.

I texted Moo-young to take my place so I watched over her while I waited, 30 mins later he arrived so I could head to her apartment. When I got to her place an older guy was placing a sold notice next to the front door. “Are you Roseia’s landlord?” I asked him.

“Yes, that would be correct, have you seen her recently? her belongings are still inside, and I just sold the apartment” he responded. “She is in the hospital recovering, so I was wondering if I could get some of her belongings. Now it seems I need to collect all of her personal belongings. Is it possible to have the rest of the day for this purpose?” I asked him.

“I’m sorry to hear that she is in the hospital, you may have the rest of the day. I am truly sorry about selling her place as she has been a great tenant for about 30 years. I’m moving into a smaller place for my retirement. Here is the key for the front door, she was always a bit old fashioned when it came to using a key over using a code for her door” he shared.

Once he left, I contacted Shin-ju and Ji-ah to come over to help with collecting all her belongings, I called the old hag to get the old man’s help with teleporting some of her larger belongings. She agreed with the condition of me taking over the jobs she saved for Roseia. For the rest of the day the four of us got all of her belongings out and I was able to have a discussion with Ji-ah about Roseia moving into the spare bedroom.

It was a very short discussion because we both had the same idea and it was clear to us she wouldn’t be leaving our lives anytime soon. We had the resources to change the main bathroom and the spare room to become accessible while Roseia was learning to walk again. as the clock struck 8pm all her smaller belongings had been moved into the apartment and her larger items had been placed into our storage unit.

Ji-ah

I packed a week’s worth of pj’s, a toiletry bag with her favourite hygiene products and her laptop, after I gave Ki Yu-ri money to order dinner for Yun, Kim Soo-oh and herself while she babysat them. Yeon and I headed back to the hospital to give her own belongings and the offer to officially move into our spare room along with the news about her apartment being sold. “Honey, do you think our daughter knew from her gut feelings about this turn of events?” I asked him. He turned to me at the red light with a raised eyebrow and a curious look on his face. “She gave me a few knowing looks this afternoon as we were bringing Roseia’s belongings into the apartment and especially just before we left tonight.”

“She does have my abilities and your curious sense of the world so it makes sense for her to pick up the clues human children miss at her mental age” Yeon replied. “It will be interesting to see what influence Roseia will have over her as she gets older.”

As he said this, we were pulling up to the hospital, Yeon let me out so l could go ahead while he parked the car.

I walked into her room as she was eating blueberry and grape jelly, she waved to me in greeting, then her eye went wide at the sight of her toiletry bag and laptop. {are those what i think they are?} she asked me and I thought back {Yeon went to get some of your personal belongings from your apartment.} “i packed a week’s worth of pj’s, your favourite bathroom products in case you are allowed to take a shower and laptop to pass the time and improve communication.”

I continued “He ran into your nice landlord who has had to sell your apartment but don’t worry all your stuff has been taken out of there. We have the things you need right now at our place and the rest are in storage. The guy felt really sorry about it and told Yeon how you have been a great tenant for 30 years. I realise this is not the best way to break the news, you won’t be homeless as we are offering for you to move in with us.”

By this time Yeon had entered the room so he saw her burst into tears, Moo-young gave her a gentle hug {these are happy tears} she let us know. “Give us a thumbs up if you are saying yes” I asked and she gave us a thumbs up, which warmed my heart.

The doctor walked in the room after overhearing the conversation “this takes one of our concerns off our list so we can focus on your recovery. “ Roseia startled everyone by doing a big yawn, “Doctor, when can she have a shower or a wash with assistance?” I asked him. “In a day or two depending on how you are feeling Roseia, for now a change of pj’s is allowed” he informed us.

A nurse came to take away the empty bowl and all the males left the room and the nurse came back to help me with changing Roseia into a clean pair of pj’s without disturbing her IV lines. The only male to re-enter the room was Moo-young who would be guarding her overnight from attacks. I left her room and caught up with Yeon to head home.

Moo-young

I was on overnight watch shift, so around two am I felt a shift in her energy sending a shock to her core. This soon showed with the machines going off letting the staff something had gone wrong. I sat on the couch giving them space to bring her vitals to a reasonable level and it was during this moment of chaos, I heard {Moo-young I have given her a tiny bit of her fox energy back and her body is trying to reject it. When the coast is clear give her a tiny amount of calming energy to allow her fox energy to accept her temporary human body. This will be vital for her to survive; I love you son.}

The only person who called me son was Hyunuiong so I knew it was serious when called on me like this, I waited till they had stabilised her. The staff gave me a thankful look as they left the room, I gently grabbed her left hand and sent a tiny bit of calming energy with a plea to her own energy to accept her own human body. I stayed by her side to protect and keep her company, occasionally giving her a bit more energy to help stabilise her core along with a barrier to stop any leakage. He knew her body needed to be full fox and healed to a certain point for her core to be fixed.
